Mars is red on the outside, gray on the inside, rover discovers

NASA's Curiosity Mars rover completed its very first drilling activity on the Red Planet, yielding a gray powder from inside an ancient rock.?

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity, dispatched to learn if the planet ever had ingredients for life, drilled its first bit of powder from inside a potentially water-formed ancient rock, scientists said on Wednesday.

The robotic geology station, which landed inside a giant impact basin on Aug. 6 for a two-year mission, transferred about a tablespoon of rock powder from its drill into a scoop, pictures relayed by the rover Wednesday showed.

"We're all very happy to get this confirmation and relieved that the drilling was a complete success," Curiosity engineer Scott McCloskey of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, told reporters on a conference call.

On Feb. 8, the rover used its powerful drill, the first instrument of its type to be sent to Mars, to bore inside a flat, veined piece of bedrock, which appears to contain minerals formed by flowing water.

The sample, retrieved from at least 2 inches (5 cm) beneath the surface of the rock, will be sieved and portions of it processed inside two onboard science instruments.

The gray powder is strikingly different than the ubiquitous red dust that covers the planet's surface, a result of oxidation from solar ultraviolet radiation.

"Having a rock-drilling capability on a rover is a significant advancement," said Louise Jandura, chief engineer for Curiosity's sample system.

"It allows us to go beyond the surface layer of the rock, unlocking a kind of time capsule of evidence about the state of Mars going back 3 or 4 billion years," Jandura told reporters.

The drill is the last of Curiosity's 10 science instruments to be tested since the rover landed inside Gale Crater, located near the planet's equator.

The site was selected because of a three-mile (5-km) high mound of what appears to be layered sediments rising from the crater's floor.

Rather than driving directly over to the mountain, scientists decided to explore an area in the opposite direction that showed intriguing signs of past water.

Water is believed to be a key ingredient for life.

"The rocks in this area have a really rich geologic history and they have the potential to give us information about multiple interactions of water and rock," said Curiosity scientist Joel Hurowitz, also with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The fine-grained rocks are filled with veins and spherical deposits, including what appears to be calcium sulfate, a mineral which forms on Earth when water flows through fractures in rock. Mars is the planet in our solar system most like Earth.

"When you find exactly these sorts of conditions on Earth ... and everything still goes right, it's still an accident of fate to preserve organics," Curiosity's lead scientist John Grotzinger of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena told Reuters.

"So we'll have to separate at some point the pursuit of what may have been a habitable environment from what may or may not be an environment that preserves organics," he said.

"Obviously we're interested in the organics  but right now we're sort of on the pathway to hopefully characterizing this place as a habitable environment," Grotzinger said.

Florida man ditches suburbia for the tropics

Just before Christmas I received an e-mail from a local bank vice president with the subject line, "Farewell."

The latest casualty of a rotten economy making an attempt at gracefully announcing his "pursuit of another endeavor," I thought.

Until I read further into the note from Kevin Benson, who at 35 was a VP with BB&T Mortgage Warehouse Lending in Orlando.

"After extensive soul searching and prioritizing my life the past couple years," the e-mail read, "I decided to stop day-dreaming about doing these things and make this dream a reality. With a heavy heart but a resolute spirit I have rented my house, sold my car, resigned from my job at BB&T, given away or sold a good amount of my possessions and purchased a one way ticket."

This guy wasn't getting laid off. He was laying off his old life and hiring a new one.

How many times have you thought, even for a second, about sending such a note?

I'm a homebody but even I have a pang of jealousy at Kevin's willingness to risk it all for a year (maybe more) on the road in Central and South America. And, just a guess, you probably feel it, too.

If you're with me, let's all live vicariously through Kevin for the rest of this column...

I knew Kevin back in high school, though we hadn't talked in more than 15 years until I told him I wanted to write about how he ditched suburbia for the tropics.

The first part of his story is typical enough.

He graduated from the University of Florida and immediately started a career in banking.

He bought a house in Altamonte Springs. Became president of his homeowners association. And put on a tie every morning for the 25-minute commute to his downtown office, where he drank cup after cup of bland Folger's coffee.

Then about five years ago a buddy convinced him to go to Spain and Italy. He was hooked.

And after a couple of years of cobbling together his vacation time to travel, he decided it wasn't enough. He had three weeks vacation each year, decent by most standards, but too little to see the world the way he really wanted to.

It dawned on him. He's not married. No kids. Why not travel before he's too old or tied down?

He planned for a couple years and at the end of last year he sold his Infiniti, rented his house and ? hardest of all ? quit his job.

"No one in their right mind would give up a good job, right?"

You said it, Kevin, not me.

He met some resistance along the way. On Christmas Eve, four days before he flew alone to Mexico, his family worried out loud about how dangerous his plan was.

"I've had a lot of support," he says. "And a lot of people saying, 'I could never do that.'"

Curiosity Rover to Eat Mars Rock Dust After Drilling Success

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has beamed home photos confirming that it recovered samples from deep within a Red Planet rock, cementing the robot's place in?exploration history.

The Curiosity rover drilled 2.5 inches (6.4 centimeters) into a Martian outcrop on Feb. 8, and today (Feb. 20) mission scientists first set eyes on images showing drill tailings sitting in Curiosity's scoop, waiting to be transferred to analytical instruments on the robot's body.

The photos confirm that Curiosity has pulled off an historic achievement, scientists said.

"This is the first time any robot, fixed or mobile, has drilled into a rock to collect a sample on Mars," Louise Jandura, sample system chief engineer for Curiosity at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., told reporters today.

"In fact, this is the first time any rover has drilled into a rock to collect a sample anywhere but on Earth," Jandura added. "In the five-decade history of the space age, this is indeed a rare event." [Curiosity's First Drilling on Mars (Photos)]

Breaking open a time capsule

Curiosity landed inside Mars' huge Gale Crater on the night of Aug. 5, kicking off a two-year prime mission to determine if the area has ever been capable of supporting microbial life.

Along with its 10 science instruments and 17 cameras, Curiosity's hammering drill is considered key to this quest, for it allows scientists to peer deep into Martian rocks for evidence of past habitability ? something no other Red Planet robot has been able to do.

The arm-mounted drill "allows us to go beyond the surface layer of the rock, unlocking a kind of time capsule of evidence about the state of Mars going back three or four billion years," Jandura said.

The first drilling location is an intriguing time capsule indeed, scientists say. Curiosity bored into part of an outcrop called "John Klein," which is shot through with light-colored mineral veins and other evidence of long-ago exposure to liquid water.

"All of these features tell us that the rocks in this area have a really rich geological history, and they have the potential to give us information about multiple interactions between water and rock at this location," said JPL's Joel Hurowitz, sampling system scientist for Curiosity.

Mission scientists will learn more about that history when the drilled sample is transferred to two of Curiosity's key instruments, CheMin (short for Chemistry and Mineralogy) and SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars).

"That'll play out over the next few days here," said JPL's Daniel Limonadi, lead systems engineer for Curiosity's surface sampling and science system.

A few glitches

The recovered powder has already been used to clean out Curiosity's sample-handling system, to help ensure that the system is scrubbed free of potential contaminants from Earth. A minor software glitch has delayed the delivery of the sample to CheMin and SAM, but the team found a workaround, researchers said.

The Curiosity team has also become aware of another potential issue with the the sample-handling hardware. Engineers built two models of this hardware to run tests here on Earth, and the sieving screen has begun to detach on one of them.

But this only happened after extensive use, and the sieve remained functional, rover team members said. And they stressed that there is no sign of any problem with the sampling-handling gear Curiosity toted to Mars, though they'll take some measures to lessen the sieve's workload on the Red Planet.

"Based on the test results to date, and based on how we expect to use the hardware on Mars, we really have pretty good confidence that we're going to be able to use this hardware through the prime mission and beyond," Limonadi said.

'Zombie' Cells Created In New Mexico Lab Said To Outperform Living Ones In Some Ways

Think the only zombies out there are the ones you see in science fiction movies?

Think again.

Researchers in New Mexico say they've created zombie cells -- near-perfect replicas of mammalian cells that can perform many of the same functions despite the fact that they're not actually alive. But instead of pursuing and eating people as sci-fi zombies often do, these experimental cells may someday do our bidding -- finding use in commercial applications ranging from sensors to catalysts to fuel cells.

Not quite sure you understand? Think of the cells as a possible next step in nanotechnology, in which scientists create machines not from big hunks of metal but from individual atoms and molecules.

"It's very challenging for researchers to build structures at the nanometer scale," lead researcher Dr. Bryan Kaehr, a materials scientist at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, said in a written statement. "We can make particles and wires, but 3-D arbitrary structures haven't been achieved yet. With this technique, we don't need to build those structures -- nature does it for us."

The technique involves first depositing silica -- the stuff sand is made of -- onto the tiny structures inside living cells. Then the cells are heated to burn away the proteins they're made of, leaving behind the nonliving but structurally similar zombies.

And like the lumbering zombies dreamed up by Hollywood screenwriters, these cellular zombies are very hard to get rid of.

Dr. Jeffrey Brinker, a University of New Mexico professor and another member of the research team, said in the statement that the zombie cells exist in a "robust, three-dimensionally stable form that resists shrinkage even upon heating to over 500 degrees Centigrade [932 degrees Fahrenheit]. The refractoriness of these delicate structures is amazing."

Let's just hope these zombies don't swell up, sprout legs, and start following us around.

The research was published with the title "Cellular Complexity Captured in Durable Silica Biocomposites" in the Oct. 8, 2012 issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Some people are not self-conscious and do not mind exercising in a crowded public health club. Others, however, may avoid going to the gym simply because they ARE self-conscious. They may feel that other people constantly stare at them and silently scrutinize the way they look or how they exercise. Such individuals often imagine that they are always on display.

Home gyms allow workouts in the privacy of your home. If you?re a bit shy or self-conscious, you never have to miss a workout because you fear being watched or evaluated by complete strangers.

Are you more likely to exercise if you have the tools within reach at home? Research has indicated that people who buy home exercise equipment are more likely to start exercising than people who do not own any fitness equipment. Whether these people continue to exercise regularly depends greatly upon their personal levels of motivation and dedication.

Realistically, if you are someone who has always lacked motivation to exercise, most likely you would be wasting money if you bought a home gym. By the same token, if you are truly motivated to get into shape and to stay in shape, having a home gym can improve your motivation to exercise regularly.

The cost of gym memberships can add up month after month and year after year. Traveling to and from the gym can result in additional costs. Buying your own home gym may initially seem expensive, but in the long run, you can actually save money.

Home gyms sell for as little as a few hundred dollars or as much as a few thousand dollars. Certainly, the more the machine costs, the higher the quality is apt to be. A decent home gym should last for many years, even through lots of regular use, thus making such an investment worthwhile and cost effective.

Strength training is essential to good health. A home gym is a great resource to have for engaging in routine strength-training workouts.

Strength training builds strong muscles, improves heart health, promotes weight loss, helps prevent bone loss, protects the joints and back, and helps fight free radicals. Building muscle strength creates a leaner, tighter body and improves looks. Strong muscles also improve mental functions and boost the energy level. Regular strength training contributes to overall good health!

Home gyms can provide other health benefits, as well. For instance, even though public gyms stress the importance of wiping down fitness machines with antibacterial cleaners after each use, there is no guarantee that everyone will do so. As a result, bad bacteria and viruses may be spread among gym members through the sharing of these units. Having a home gym, on the other hand, may greatly reduce the spread of disease.

Yes, strength training should be an important part of your fitness program! A home gym is a great fitness machine to help you achieve a stronger, leaner, fitter physique!
