United Nations in South Africa ? News Archive ? Secretary ...

30 October 2012 | News

Seoul ? Thank you very much for this opportunity to speak with you.?I am always happy to come home to Korea ? but this trip is especially meaningful.
?
This evening, I will have the great honour of receiving the Seoul Peace Prize. ?I will accept it on behalf of the entire United Nations ? especially those brave staff members serving under difficult and often dangerous conditions.
?
Tomorrow, I will have the opportunity to speak to the National Assembly. ?I feel privileged for this first-ever opportunity for the UN Secretary-General to bring the UN?s message directly to the representatives of the Korean people.
?
On both occasions, I will talk about people ? how the United Nations must serve the world?s people and how the United Nations can succeed with the support of ordinary citizens.
?
That is why I am so grateful to WFUNA (World Federation of United Nations Associations). ?I thank the leadership of Ambassador Park Soo-gil. Your associations are made up of individuals who believe in the United Nations. I am delighted to begin my trip by meeting all of you.
?
Today we are discussing one of my favourite topics: sports!
?
This year we were all impressed by the fantastic Olympic Games in London.
?
I had the great privilege of running with the Olympic torch.
?
It was particularly inspiring because that same day I had been in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
?
I went to the stadium in Sarajevo where the Olympics were held in 1984. ?I ran with an athlete who told me that during the Balkans wars in the 1990s, he had to train at night to avoid snipers.
?
Then I visited Srebrenica. ?In 1995, Srebrenica was the scene of the worst act of genocide in Europe since the Second World War. I was there to mourn the deaths of thousands of Muslim men and boys with the mothers, wives and daughters they left behind.
?
Srebrenica was a stark reminder of what happens when the United Nations ? and the international community ? fail to act.
?
When I arrived the same day in London, I saw the immense good we can achieve when the international community comes together.
?
At the 2012 London Olympics, the world was united by the power of sport. ?Running through the streets and then carrying the IOC flag at the opening ceremony the next day, I was awestruck by the jubilance, the spirit of friendly competition, the hope for a better world.
?
The London Games made history.
?
For the first time, Saudi Arabia sent female athletes to participate in the Games. This was a welcome step toward greater gender equality.
?
I also followed with interest the Paralympic Games. Those athletes travelled a tough road to London. They braved discrimination, doubts and difficulties. Whether or not they won medals, they were all true champions ? each one of them.
?
I congratulate the United Kingdom ? and also the Korean teams. ?I know that many people here were up very late watching Korean athletes.
?
The athletes set many records. But before the Games even opened, the United Nations set its own record. For the first time in our history, all 193 UN Member States co-sponsored the Olympic truce resolution.
?
That resolution called for a truce during the Olympic Games.
Sports again proved its power to unite.
?
The Olympic Truce initiative stemmed from our longstanding partnership with the Olympic family. I have made conscious efforts to strengthen our ties. I rely on my Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, Wilfried Lemke, to keep this issue high on our agenda.
?
In 2009, I spoke to the International Olympic Congress about how we could work more closely together. I am proud to be the first Secretary-General ever to travel with the International Olympic Committee President, Jacques Rogge, to projects that are helping people through sports.
?
We went to Zambia and visited a project called Fountain of Hope. ?The children there had playing fields and reading materials. They learned sports and life skills.
?
What really impressed me in Zambia and in similar projects around the world is how much sports, life skills and values are linked.
?
Teamwork. Fair play. Respect for your opponent. Honouring the rules of the game. ?These are all necessary in sports. But they are also essential to relations between people and countries.
?
If I could, I would take all the lessons that those children in Zambia learned at the Fountain of Hope and share them with diplomats at our meetings in New York.
?
To spread this message, I have opened the doors of the United Nations to partners that use sports to promote our shared values. ?Sports can help us achieve our Millennium Development Goals.
?
The Saudi Arabian women athletes were just one example of how we can use sports to promote gender equality.
?
For boys and girls, and for men and women, sports are a path to better health. For youth, especially, sports provide recreation so they are not tempted by illegal drugs.
?
Sports can bring people together and teach them about our common humanity. ?At athletic games, ethnic, religious and economic divides disappear. ?So do stereotypes, fear and misunderstanding.
?
That is why the United Nations has programmes that bring people from different communities together to play sports. ?Our peacekeepers organize friendly soccer matches in places like Cyprus.
?
The UN runs a project called Basketball without Borders, where students meet and learn that they may come from different backgrounds but they share the same dreams for the future.
?
Basketball is also the inspiration for our Nothing but Nets campaign to fund the fight against malaria.
?
Sporting events help us raise awareness about human rights, the environment and our fight against poverty.
?
The United Nations is proud to count many star athletes among our goodwill ambassadors. These famous players take our message to tennis matches and football fields. They engage whole new audiences in our work. And they achieve public diplomacy through sports.
?
This country will be the proud host of a number of major sporting events in the coming years.
?
We are all looking forward to the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
?
The United Nations will be by your side cheering for the Olympic ideals.
?
Before then, Korea will host the 2015 Universiade in Gwangju.
?
This is a wonderful opportunity for students to come together for sports and culture, dialogue and understanding.
?
The United Nations has already signed a partnership agreement with the organizers to promote the Millennium Development Goals.
?
We are even exploring the possibility of a first-ever united Korean team to compete jointly at the event. I am certain the whole Peninsula would cheer for that team to win.
?
Last week, I met one of the world?s most impressive daredevil athletes.
?
Felix Baumgartner of Austria recently broke the sound barrier when he jumped to earth.
?
Maybe you watched his incredible journey. ?I myself watched the live coverage of his courageous journey. At one point he was moving faster than 800 miles per hour. I was mesmerized by his amazing courage.
?
When we spoke, I told him that he showed there is no limit to human endeavour. ?There is no limit in our dreams.
?
We cannot all take a death-defying leap from space, but we can all take a brave leap of faith. Faith in humanity. Faith in our common future. Faith in our ability to change the world.
?
Thank you.

The Retailers VS Internet ? E-commerce And Internet Marketing ...

So I made the decision, after a slow month, sitting in its brick and mortar, which can not proceed operating for its operator, and the require for a true company that does not make you sit in a retail keep . You need to have a organization with a feasible assure of financial freedom, which indicates a nominal overhead and highest return on investment decision that attracts buyers and utilizes the newest technologies.

The rewards of on the web advertising businesses and on-line organizations, as opposed to retail shops is the following.

No overhead

Fall-delivery has very own e-commerce sites to market goods with out possessing to sign-up. What is fall-delivery indicate? Properly, put it this way. If a shop, the continuous overhead of lease, and demand lots of space to screen products, stores on the internet just your supplier or the maker or ship it straight by basically sending an buy type. Wow, if I say we do not require as significantly first cash to start off an e-commerce site or online organization? ? Certainly, just. You will still need to have a big advertising price range hard work, just like any on the internet retailer.

Unrestricted overall flexibility

The Internet is a great area, simply because issues are always modifying. This indicates more possibilities are ever more readily available. For instance, the introduction of social mass media picture, or Net 2. Google again caffeine, which takes into account the number of recurrent updates to the content of the site of the people. But what does this really translate from one particular stage of watch of a businessman, there are choices.

Now, you can also use the firm on-line a bit ?all above the globe. In reality, the very last two months, I was in Panama, Las Angeles and Las Vegas. And ? I?m even now creating these posts, which correspond to my company associates, world wide web designers and consumers ? jogging a organization profitably. Sounds very good? And ?good! Especially when here in Montreal, the temperature can go to -40 levels! Montreal web style work has never been far better!

In restricted

Retail indicate get in touch with ? with men and women. As terrible as it is to say, sometimes that speak to is extremely unpleasant. Men and women can be really unpleasant. Nonetheless, online marketers and other World wide web firms have the luxury of responding to e-mails and phone calls when acceptable, give their owners to devote significantly less time with challenging consumers. In addition, it is significantly significantly less very likely and far more challenging for on the internet consumers rely on the support of e-commerce or on the internet organization chooses suitable yet tough to obtain. There is a specific diploma of intimacy and privateness that comes with the web, with web, in spite of the quite a few reviews of privacy invasions.

That stated, the services sector, on-line or offline, equally are dealing with folks ? buyers.

So keep this in mind when producing your organization product!

Fast-food chains struggle to reopen after Sandy

8 hrs.

Sales at fast-food joints?such as Starbucks, McDonald's, and Dunkin' Donuts ? forced to close because of superstorm Sandy ? should rebound swiftly, if they can also open quickly. With bridges and tunnels closed, and many of the arterial supply pathways jammed up along the East Coast, that could be a big "if."

"This is pretty damaging for the chains that have been forced to close, depending on how long they stay closed. Not only is that lost sales ? Starbucks, for example, did $1.14 million per unit last year, so that's about $22,000 per week per unit ??but it also disrupts the supply chain," Same Oches, editor of QSR magazine, a quick serve industry trade publication, told NBC News.

On Wednesday morning, a steady drip of customers made their pilgrimage to a Starbucks at 42 Hillel Place in the Flatbush area of Brooklyn. Outside, a whir of distant chainsaws filled the air around Flatbush Avenue and Nostrand. Inside, patrons recharged themselves with coffee, powered up their cellphones with working outlets, and tried to make use of the free wi-fi.

The store's three employees served up medium roasts, but the bagel baskets were bare as the usual delivery truck didn't arrive that morning, barista Jo-Ann Gonzalez, 24, told NBCNEWS. The store started the morning by throwing away food spoiled when the store was closed on Monday and Tuesday. Gonzalez?shook her head at how shellshocked New Yorkers were after the storm.?"I'm from Florida. Hurricanes come, and then they go. People are freaking out," she said.

A FedEx driver from Canarsie, 3 miles away, nursed a tall blonde coffee at the counter.?The storm flooded his basement,?ruining a $2,500 boiler he had just installed, and his car was still underwater. He stayed at his brother's house around the corner to make use of the running hot water and electricity.?"I'm just catching a little time out, a breath from the stress," the man, who asked not to be named, told NBC News.

Other stores that aren't able to open as fast, that stay closed for a week, could have a real impact on?quarterly numbers, Ronald Ruggless, Southwest Bureau Chief for Nation's Restaurant News, told NBC News.

A Starbucks spokesperson would not comment on how Sandy is affecting their financials, as the chain is focused on dealing with store closures. "The safety of our partners, our employees, is our number one priority," ?a spokesperson told NBC News. On Monday, Starbucks closed 1,000 locations from Virginia to Maine. By noon Tuesday, 250 stores remained closed, primarily in areas without power or experiencing heavy traffic issues.

Dunkin' Brands, the franchisor of Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin Robbins, said that a "significant" number of Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin-Robbins were still shuttered in the Mid-Atlantic regions. The closures are concentrated in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, mainly in areas with evacuations or power outages. A few suffered "serious" damage.?However, a spokesman told NBC News, "The majority of our restaurants are open, and the storm has not had a materially financial impact on the company.?

Without power, food in refrigerators can begin to spoil, and traffic snarls and supply chain hiccups could make it hard to restock. That shouldn't affect snack places and coffee sellers much, except in the case of perishables like milk. That puts a crimp in the morning coffee for latte lovers.?People will "just have to drink it black," Ruggles said.

Fast service stores that can reopen quickly can actually experience a bump in sales as other options are closed and the storm-weary don't feel like making food or patronizing places that cost more in terms of time and money, said Ruggless. There's also little in the way of long-term sales damage by breaking customers out of their daily coffee, doughnut, or burger habit.

"These places are so much a part of people's routine that everything else in the world could be upset and they would pick it back up," he said.

Like a kickboard held underwater, however much sales get pushed down by Sandy, the resulting pent-up demand should make up for the losses, said Stephen Anderson, Senior Analyst at Miller Tabak + Co.

In a note to investors published Friday before the storm, Anderson said that Sandy would turn numbers for restaurants it covers, like Dunkin' Brands, Cheesecake Factory, Chipotle, Darden Restaurants and Panera Bread from "fractionally positive" to "fractionally negative." That then would push November to 1 percent positive, or better.

Reached after the storm passed, Anderson told NBC News: "With the storm arriving earlier and of much earlier duration, the negative effect on October comps will be that much more pronounced, but I think the jump in comps starting Oct. 31 could be more accentuated."

Center for Connected Health to study SMS for managing cancer pain

Tags: cancer | Center for Connected Health | McKesson Foundation | mobile health cancer | Mobilizing for Health grants | pain management | Partners Healthcare | SMS healthcare | text messaging?|

Joseph Kvedar, The Center for Connected HealthFor the second year in a row, the Center for Connected Health at Partners HealthCare in Boston has received a McKesson Foundation research grant to develop and study a text messaging system that will help patients with a specific condition. This time, the unspecified grant will support SMS and voice response technology for managing pain associated with cancer treatment in hopes of reducing hospitalizations and improving outcomes.

?We believe this will be the first-of-its-kind mobile health program to support pain management for cancer patients, incorporating evidence-based interventions with a scalable mobile platform,? Center for Connected Health Director Dr. Joseph Kvedar tells Healthcare IT News.

Harvard-affiliated researchers will study 122 adults with lung cancer and moderate to severe pain for four months. Half will be asked to assess and report their cancer-related pain via text messaging or interactive voice response and will receive feedback on how to manage symptoms, based on clinical guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. A control group will only get standard treatment as the Center for Connected Health test the impact of mobile interventions on the daily life of cancer patients.

?There is increasing evidence for the use of interactive voice response technologies in mobile health interventions because it is low cost, convenient, reliable and effective for symptom and treatment monitoring in chronic disease management,? principal investigator Dr. Kamal Jethwani, corporate manager for research and innovation at the Center for Connected Health, says.

The McKesson Foundation is funding the research through its Mobilizing for Health program. A year ago, the program awarded a grant to the Center for Connected Health to integrate text messaging into a diabetes self-management program serving low-income populations.

Forex Analysis: Low Volatility Favors Dolllar Reversal | Avid Investor ...

Article Summary: Extremely low forex volatility levels warn against chasing US Dollar strength as it starts the week higher. We continue to favor low-volatility range trading until further notice. Yet it will be critical to watch US economic event risk in what may be a busy week of forex trading.

DailyFX PLUS System Trading Signals ?The US Dollar (ticker: USDOLLAR) has rallied to start the week, but a busy US economic calendar and adverse market conditions warn that the USD could see sharp pullbacks in the days ahead.

Our US Dollar forecast remains cautiously bearish as our FX Options market-based DailyFX Volatility Indices remain near their lowest levels since 2007. The safe-haven currency typically strengthens during times of market turbulence, and the fact that traders are betting on such small forex market moves favors USD weakness.

Yet the critical caveat is that forex economic event risk is quite elevated in the days ahead?especially with the US Nonfarm Payrolls report for October due Friday. If we see any especially significant surprises, expect US Dollar pairs to respond in kind.

In terms of currency trading strategy, we?ll continue to favor low-volatility trading systems such as our proprietary ?Congestion Opportunities?/Range2. That said, our trend-based ?Tidal Shift?/Momentum2 has been doing well in selling the US Dollar through recent trading. We remain in favor of trend trades in key FX pairs?full summary in the table below.

DailyFX Individual Currency Pair Conditions and Trading Strategy Bias

The US Dollar rally to start the week might present a good selling opportunity, but first we would like to see similar signs of turnaround. That would come on fresh ?Tidal Shift? positions, and we?ll be looking at trade opportunities in the EURUSD and AUDUSD in particular.

Fresh selling opportunities in the Japanese Yen might come on the heels of the Bank of Japan interest rate decision. We see evidence that the USDJPY may have set an important bottom, but the Japanese Yen?s next moves will very much depend on the trajectory of US Treasury yields and broader interest rates.

Market Conditions:Our DailyFX Volatility Indices remain at their lowest levels since 2007. Such slow market conditions may be unsustainable given significant risks to global financial markets. Yet we think it?s unwise to bet on strong currency moves when the trend towards lower volatility is crystal-clear.

Definitions

Volatility Percentile ? The higher the number, the more likely we are to see strong movements in price. This number tells us where current implied volatility levels stand in relation to the past 90 days of trading. We have found that implied volatilities tend to remain very high or very low for extended periods of time. As such, it is helpful to know where the current implied volatility level stands in relation to its medium-term range.

Trend ? This indicator measures trend intensity by telling us where price stands in relation to its 90 trading-day range. A very low number tells us that price is currently at or near 90-day lows, while a higher number tells us that we are near the highs. A value at or near 50 percent tells us that we are at the middle of the currency pair?s 90-day range.

Range High ? 90-day closing high.

Range Low ? 90-day closing low.

Last ? Current market price.

Bias ? Based on the above criteria, we assign the more likely profitable strategy for any given currency pair. A highly volatile currency pair (Volatility Percentile very high) suggests that we should look to use Breakout strategies. More moderate volatility levels and strong Trend values make Momentum trades more attractive, while the lowest Vol Percentile and Trend indicator figures make Range Trading the more attractive strategy.

Paper Computing technology the first step to paper-based Google ...

At the University of Tokyo, the Naemura Group is developing paper computing technology, which can automatically erase, copy and print hand-drawn sketches on paper.

As well as using a camera and computer, this system uses a laser and UV light, making it possible to work directly with the hand-drawn sketches using the computer.

So for example, the user can leave only the edges of hand-written characters, creating 3D like text, or draw a figure by hand and color it in automatically.

"This is one technology for truly turning ordinary paper into a display. Until now, it's been possible to project things onto paper and use it as a screen, or import things drawn on paper to PC by using a digital pen. But the first method uses light, so the results can only be seen in the dark, and with the second method, even if you can import things, you can't access them on paper from the computer."

The pen for sketching uses Frixion thermo-sensitive ink, which becomes transparent when heated, and sketches drawn by the Frixion pens are lit from behind by a laser to erase them. The ink can be erased to a high level of accuracy, at intervals of 0.024 mm.

The paper is coated with a photochromic material, which changes color when it absorbs light, and a DMD-driven UV projector with a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels is used to print the image onto the paper.

"The idea is to do computing on paper. But in the future, we'd like to enable several people to create one document, like with Google Docs, actually using real-world paper while far apart. We'd also like to enhance the rendering that's possible through collaboration between people and computers. For example, by giving more detailed access than you get by hand, and enabling you to draw large areas at once."

Interviews: At The Gates ? ?We're not writing new songs.? (An ...

Swedish heavy metal pioneers At The Gates will this year join the ranks of Nasum by touring Australia for the first time in 2012, after a career or more than two decades. At The Gates are legendary within the metal community, sparking up interest for new bands and directly influencing movements within the death metal genre.

The group is notorious for its on-again-off-again career, but have been going strong after re-forming in 2007 for live shows. Metal Obsession talks to vocalist and founding member Toman Lindberg.

Metal Obsession: Hey Tomas, obviously we?re speaking in regard to your well-publicised debut Australian tour ? how does it feel to be coming out for the first time?

Tomas Lindberg: This is the first time coming to Australia with this project, I have toured with other projects of course but with this one it?s the first time, yeah ? it feels good.

MO: You guys have been around since the 1990s, have you had the chance to come to Australia before?

TL: We had the opportunity to come out before the band split up for the first time and again in 2008, but things were hectic then and we just couldn?t manage the trip, but I have heard a lot of good things about Australia from friends and other bands. So it will be good to get out there.

MO: ?I understand you have a full-time job, what makes you keep on going with the band?

TL: Well, I just like to keep busy, you know, I get more tired doing nothing. I get more tired when I?m not doing anything ? sometimes I think I might like to sit around at home and do nothing, but I do a full week?s work, two rehearsals on Friday and I just want to sit at home. But if there is a good band playing on the weekend ? ?you go and you get more energy.

MO: Do you prefer your life now, or would you rather be playing full-time?

TL: There?s been times that I supported myself and family from just being a musician. It?s pretty harsh sometimes but good when one pay check arrives. Then you have to hassle record companies to get paid from somewhere else, then you have got to tour to pay bills and then there?s doing stuff for the wrong reasons.?At least for me, I?m not saying other people, but there are dangers.

MO: How do you mean?

TL: I?m saying if you stat having a professional career in music, it?s not saying it happens to all of them, but living off music there are dangers. ?You say yes to stuff you shouldn?t have done if you didn?t have to.

MO: Like what?

TL: Tours, you know, you?ll be called on to tour when you?re feeling tired or uninspired just to pay bills. People will be asking you to do recordings when you don?t really want to do it.

MO: So it kills the artistic element of music?

TL: Exactly, if you have a full-time job that pays the bills ? I can only speak for myself ? but it means I only do stuff I really want to do and feel inspired about doing.

MO: Well, speaking of feeling inspired ? are you guys writing at the moment?

TL: We are not writing new songs.

MO: Why not?

TL: Well, basically, it?s one of those things where we have reformed for live purposes only and saying that, we said 2008 was our last shows ? now it?s 2012 and we?re still doing shows -so I learned to keep my mouth shut about things like that. If something happens, it happens, but we are not writing.

MO: Do you think you will in the future?

TL: Basically, it?s a thing where people have perceptions about what the new record should be and probably their own thoughts about us doing it. ?Since we haven?t done it since 1995, it?s harder for us to do a new recording than if the band hadn?t existed for so much time. There are so many preconceptions of what we would come out with. As soon as there?s preconceptions there?s a possibility for disappointment.

It?s quite hard to compete ?with other people?s expectations. When we were recording it was because of the need to express ourselves as a unit and didn?t care at the time.

MO: I guess that makes more sense. Speaking of creativity, Sweden is notorious for producing amazing artists ? what is it about that place?

TL: You have a scene, a lot of cities have different scenes, but a lot of bands will focus on that scene?s style. Sweden is what you would call a safe country. We have a pretty good welfare system, there is actually spare time in which to create good music, you are untroubled. We have a pretty good life here, actually, there?s time to go to rehearsals and money to pay for rehearsals.

MO: It sounds like a good life! Well, time?s getting close ? do you think there?s anything left to achieve that you haven?t already, do you have any goals left?

TL: There?s always new stuff, when there?s not new stuff to explore or achieve ? you should call it quits, you know? I mean, what we do every night now might not be re-inventing the wheel or something, but we?re with new people every night ?- it?s such an overwhelming experience, when we play live now it?s s a kick. When you feel you?ve done enough, it happens instantly ? it?s time to move onto something else. There?s always new stuff to try with other people.

?

Make sure to catch AT THE GATES on their upcoming Australia. This will be the first and perhaps only time you?ll ever see the band perform in Australia.

Sandy: East Coast braces for epic hurricane, ?life-threatening? storm surge

Waves crash into a pier in Nags Head, N.C., Oct. 27, 2012. (Gerry Broome/AP)

"Superstorm." "The Perfect Storm." "Frankenstorm."

Whatever you want to call it, the East Coast is bracing for Hurricane Sandy, an epic, "rare hybrid storm" that is expected to bring a life-threatening storm surge to the mid-Atlantic coast, Long Island Sound and New York harbor, forecasters say, with winds expected to be at or near hurricane force when it makes landfall sometime on Monday.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the Category 1 storm was centered about 260 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., and 395 miles south of New York City early Sunday, carrying maximum sustained winds of 75 mph and moving northeast at 10 mph.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the mandatory evacuation for low-lying coastal areas, including Coney Island, the Rockaways, Brighton Beach, Red Hook and some parts of lower Manhattan.

"If you don't evacuate, you're not just putting your own life at risk," Mayor Bloomberg said. "You're endangering first responders who may have to rescue you."

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the suspension of all MTA service, including Long Island Railroad and Metro North, beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday. New York City Public Schools will be closed on Monday, the mayor said.

[Related: Superstorm could impact 60 million]

Sandy is expected to continue on a parallel path along the mid-Atlantic coast later Sunday before making a sharp turn toward the northwest on Monday--with coastal New Jersey and New York City in its projected path.

But the path is not necessarily the problem.

"Don't get fixated on a particular track," the Associated Press said. "Wherever it hits, the rare behemoth storm inexorably gathering in the eastern U.S. will afflict a third of the country with sheets of rain, high winds and heavy snow."

(Weather.com)

A tropical storm warning has been issued between Cape Fear to Duck, N.C., while hurricane watches and high-wind warnings are in effect from the Carolinas through New England. The hurricane-force winds extend 175 miles from the epicenter of the storm, while tropical storm-force winds extend 520 miles--making Sandy one of the biggest storms to ever hit the East Coast.

"We're looking at impact of greater than 50 to 60 million people," Louis Uccellini, head of environmental prediction for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told the Associated Press.

"The size of this alone, affecting a heavily populated area, is going to be history making," Jeff Masters wrote on Weather Underground blog.

[Also read: Big storm scrambles presidential race schedules]

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie ordered a shutdown of the state's casinos.

"I can be as cynical as anyone," Christie said on Saturday. "But when the storm comes, if it's as bad as they're predicting, you're going to wish you weren't as cynical as you otherwise might have been."

Similar emergency evacuations were being mulled by state officials in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and even Maine.

"This is not a coastal threat alone," said Craig Fugate, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said during a media briefing early Sunday. "This is a very large area."

Forecasters also fear the combination of storm surge, high tide and heavy rain--between 3 and 12 inches in some area--could be life-threatening for coastal residents.

According to the National Hurricane Center summary, coastal water levels could rise anywhere between 1 and 12 feet from North Carolina to Cape Cod, depending on the timing of the "peak surge." A surge of 6 to 11 feet is forecast for Long Island Sound and Raritan Bay, including New York Harbor.

The storm surge in New York Harbor during Hurricane Irene, forecasters noted, was four feet.

A time to choose . . . health insurance | Georgia Health News

This time of year, many of us with employment-related health insurance confront a dizzying maze as we choose a benefits plan.

The insurance terms typically are confusing, and the types of coverage are hard to figure out.

And sometimes, the changes from the year before can be profound, especially with increases in deductibles. A deductible is the amount you have to pay before your insurance coverage kicks in.

Benefits consultants say that over the next 18 months, one-quarter to one-half of Americans who get insurance coverage through their employers will pay more of their medical bills themselves due to health plans with higher deductibles, Reuters reported this week.

Consumer expert Clark Howard says that if you are young and healthy, and if you can afford to pay a good bit out of pocket, a high-deductible plan ?could be the right fit for you.?

The deductible can be several thousand dollars, with some in the $10,000 range. But if you don?t use much health care in a typical year, ?that kind of number shouldn?t faze you,? Howard says.

A high-deductible plan is often paired with a health savings account (HSA). Money is set aside from your paycheck, tax-free, in a special savings account for you to pay out-of-pocket expenses. Unlike flexible spending accounts in traditional health plans, an HSA is not a ?use it or lose it? proposition: Any money unspent at the end of the year stays in the account. And you have the option to invest some of the money through your plan administrator, Howard notes.

But he adds that if you?re older, or if you or a family member on your plan has a chronic condition, or money is tight, a traditional plan ?probably is the way to go.?

HSA plans generally work better for people who are younger, healthy, and who have enough spare money to put into them, experts say. They can be used for co-pays, deductibles, co-insurance, and items such as hearing aids.

High-deductible plans and substantial co-insurance payments make? the price of medical services more important than ever, says Nancy Metcalf, a health insurance expert at Consumer Reports magazine.

If you have a health plan from a major insurer, you should check the insurer?s website and sign up for their pricing information on services such as elective surgeries, she says. That can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars.

?It?s shocking the variation in price, even within the network of a health plan,?? Metcalf says.

Here are some other tips to help guide your decision-making during this ?open enrollment?? season:

* Health plans are now required to provide standardized, consumer-friendly summary of benefits and coverages, including information on co-pays, deductibles, and out-of-pocket limits. This will make it easier for you to compare plans, Metcalf says.

* Check to see if your family?s physicians are in the network of the plan you?re considering. A good relationship with a primary care doctor is important to your health.

* If you have a choice of plans, you may want to compare them on quality measures. Consumer Reports has a link evaluating health plan quality in a state.

* Understand the differences between an HMO and a PPO and Point of Service (POS) plan. HMOs restrict your choice of doctors and other medical providers, but often perform better on quality scores.

* Read the plan materials thoroughly. Review any pre-existing condition exclusions and prior authorization requirements, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners says.

* Explore what a plan?s deductible really means. Co-pays and prescription drugs, for example, may or may not count toward meeting a deductible, depending on the health plan.

* Note that preventive care is free under employer plans that didn?t get ??grandfathered?? status under health care reform.

* Your adult child can remain on your health plan till age 26, a result of the Affordable Care Act. If your child is living in another state, though, you may want to consider picking a health plan from a national insurer rather than a regional plan, Metcalf says. That way,?they can use your national insurer?s network in that state, she noted.

* Make cost calculations based on your medical history. Calculate your health spending from recent years and try to estimate what your costs might be for the coming year. Don?t forget to include the cost of visits to the doctor, prescriptions and any procedures you may be planning. Also, make a list of the premiums, out-of-pocket expenses and benefits under each plan.

* You may be able to contribute pre-tax dollars to a flexible spending account (FSA), a health savings account or a similar health reimbursement arrangement (HRA). The amount that you can sock away in an FSA is limited to $2,500 in 2013.

* Check to see whether your employer offers a wellness program or incentives for healthy behavior such as exercising regularly or not smoking.

* Find out what your plan?s annual out-of-pocket spending limit is, and what counts toward it, such as deductibles and co-pays.

* See whether your medications are on the list of approved drugs in each plan. Your co-pays on drugs can vary among health plans.

Most health plans that pay for prescription drug benefits have pharmacy benefit tiers. Brand-name drugs that are usually in the top tier are the most expensive, while generic medications are in the lower tiers and are the least expensive.

If you are taking a ??biologic? drug, your health plan choices may put that medication into a separate tier, and charge you a lot more than typical brand-name prescription. People taking biologics ??will go straight to a plan that does the best job covering them,? Metcalf says.

Another change has to do with increased financial information about benefits. Your W-2 next year will include the total value of your employer health benefits. Don?t worry ? you won?t be taxed on it.

?It will be interesting for a number of people to look at,?? says Metcalf, who predicts that ?a lot of people will be surprised?? at the amount their benefits represent.

Employers must calculate this cost before hiring a new person, she says. ?From an employer standpoint, you health benefit is part of your salary.??

Here are some links to Consumer Reports tips for those who are shopping for an individual health plan, or for those who are uninsured.

Sandy disrupts presidential campaign 8 days out

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A strengthening Hurricane Sandy disrupted the White House campaign Monday, with President Obama canceling two campaign days to monitor the storm and Republican Mitt Romney sketching out contingency plans.

Obama rushed out of battleground Florida ahead of a planned noon rally to beat the worst of the weather system bearing down on the East Coast. As he was in midair, the White House announced that Tuesday's trip to Green Bay, Wis., also was off.

Obama was trying to balance the need to show command in crisis while in the final throes of a tough re-election campaign. Upon arrival at the White House, he planned to convene a video conference in the Situation Room with administration officials monitoring the storm's path and running the response. The president also scheduled a statement to news organizations at midday.

Romney planned to go forward with campaign rallies in the Midwest out of the storm's path Monday and Tuesday, apparently determined to maintain a moderate tone as the hurricane threatened to wreak havoc elsewhere. He told supporters in the storm's path to bring in their yard signs so they don't damage property and encouraged donations to the Red Cross.

But his schedule was being reviewed at his Boston headquarters on an hourly basis. Contingency plans included perhaps canceling campaigning altogether in the event of casualties or sending Romney to tour storm-damage in New Jersey, where the storm was expected to make landfall.

Republicans seek to minimize any political advantage that Obama might gain from appearing in his official, non-campaign mode in the midst of a national emergency. They note that Romney ? at least for now ? is freed from any official duties and can actively campaign in states not affected by the storm. That could change, depending on Sandy's severity.

The president met with federal emergency officials Sunday before flying to Florida that night ahead of a rally scheduled for Monday. But the intensifying storm heading to the East Coast took priority, with the president signing emergency declarations for New England states in the middle of the night from his Orlando hotel room.

By dawn the White House decided to call off the politicking. Obama made a bumpy flight back to Washington and landed in a driving rain that forced him to take his motorcade, rather than his helicopter, back to the South Lawn upon arrival.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said they changed plans because the storm picked up speed and intensity overnight, making it necessary for the president to leave earlier if he hoped to get back to Washington.

"The president's priority right now is the safety and security of Americans who are in the path of the storm," Carney said. "It's essential in his view that he be in Washington ... to oversee that effort and to be updated on it."

Obama's plans to campaign Wednesday in Ohio were still on, though campaign officials said they were evaluating travel plans on an almost hourly basis.

Most of the White House news media representatives who accompanied Obama to Florida were left there after the pilots of separate, charter flights determined it was unsafe to follow Air Force One back to Washington.

Obama's aides considered moving the Orlando event even earlier Monday morning but were told that would put Air Force One back too late to land safely. Nearly all commercial flights had already been canceled in the Washington area as heavy rains soaked the capital ahead of Sandy's expected landfall Monday night.

With eight days before Election Day, neither campaign could afford to fully shut down its political activity in a race that remains tight. Four critical election states are affected by the storm ? North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire ? but there was still unthreatened ground to cover across the rest of the country.

While the impact of the storm had yet to be seen, at the very least it was a distraction as both sides were looking to make their final appeals and millions of ballots were already being cast in early voting. It threatened to dilute Romney's efforts to close the deal with voters while giving Obama a platform to show leadership in the time of crisis. And power outages could end up cutting off their message in television ads and automatic phone calls in the eastern swing states.

Republicans concede that the storm essentially pushes a pause button on the momentum Romney had been building in key states across the country, but argue that it's not necessarily a bad thing. They insist they are in strong positions in battlegrounds like Ohio, Florida, Colorado and Iowa, but acknowledge that Virginia could be a problem. Romney was forced to cancel three rallies planned for the state on Sunday and it's unclear when he'll be able to return.

Romney's campaign is considering a plan to send the candidate to New Jersey later this week, where he could meet with victims and gauge damage with political ally Gov. Chris Christie. The move would follow the path Romney took in the wake of Hurricane Irene following the Republican National Convention, when he toured storm damage in Louisiana with Gov. Bobby Jindal, also a supporter.

Another type of storm was awaiting Romney in Ohio Monday.

The United Auto Workers announced recently a deal with Ford that promises to create 600 new jobs in nearby Brook Park, and keep 1,800 jobs in Avon Lake. The Avon Lake jobs are the product of Ford moving its commercial truck business from Mexico to Ohio.

The development not only gives Obama a chance to stoke his call for returning jobs to the U.S. from overseas, but reminds voters in auto-heavy Ohio of the auto bailout that Romney opposed.

Obama and his campaign have tirelessly jabbed at Romney's auto industry position, seen as a barrier to the Republican in Ohio and nearby northern industrial states. Romney's visit to Avon Lake will no doubt provide another reminder.

Romney also was scheduled Monday to campaign in Iowa and Wisconsin, trying to force Obama to play defense in a state where the president has been leading in the polls despite the addition of native son Paul Ryan on the GOP ticket.

Former President Bill Clinton still planned to appear before voters at the Orlando rally in Obama's absence. Later Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden were appearing together in Youngstown, Ohio. Biden was originally supposed to campaign in New Hampshire Monday, but diverted to Ohio to replace Obama after the president canceled his appearance to stick to Washington.

Polls suggest Obama has an advantage in reaching the required 270 Electoral College votes. But Romney's campaign is projecting momentum and considering trying to expand the playing field beyond the nine states that have garnered the bulk of the candidates' attention.

A senior Republican official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to disclose private deliberations, said Romney's team was discussing sending the GOP nominee, Ryan or both to traditionally left-leaning Minnesota during the campaign's final week.

Clinton planned to campaign in the state Tuesday with likely stops on college campuses, before continuing on a tireless swing to help fill Obama's void this week to Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, New Hampshire and Wisconsin.

Both campaigns used social media to urge supporters to donate to the Red Cross and said they would stop sending fundraising emails on Monday to people living in areas in the storm's path.

Romney staffers in North Carolina, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Virginia were collecting storm-relief supplies at campaign offices to be delivered via one of Romney's campaign buses. In an email, Romney encouraged supporters in the storm's path to help neighbors get ready.

"For safety's sake, as you and your family prepare for the storm, please be sure to bring any yard signs inside," the email read. "In high winds they can be dangerous, and cause damage to homes and property."

iPad mini vs. Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD: On display size and density

When Apple introduced the iPad mini, they spent quite a bit of time comparing it to the Google Nexus 7, especially when it came to the merits of the iPad mini's 4:3, 7.9-inch screen over the 16:10, 7-inch screen of the Nexus 7. Physical screen size is only one factor, however. There's also screen resolution to consider, something Apple often touts with their Retina display products like the iPhone 5, iPod touch 5, iPad 4, and MacBook Pro. But not the iPad mini. So, when we put everything on the table, how well does the iPad mini stack up not only to the Nexus 7, but the similarly screened Amazon Kindle Fire HD?

Apple's math highlighted the 35% larger physical screen size (29.6 square inches vs. 21.9 square inches). When Amazon announced their quarterly loss last week, however, they switched the topic to screen resolution, and measured the iPad mini's 1024x768, 163 ppi display against the Kindle Fire HD's (identical to Nexus 7) 1280x800, 254 ppi display. Amazon's math worked out to 30% more pixels (1,024,000 vs. 786,432 pixels) and 33% higher pixel density (216 vs. 163).

Here's how the iPad mini and Nexus 7/Kindle Fire HD 7 compare in terms of physical screen size (left), and in terms of pixel count (right). For the purposes of these diagrams, the iPad mini will always be represented in RED and the Nexus 7/Kindle Fire HD in BLUE. The squares superimposed on top will provide a constant, relative measure for the pixel sizes of of the displays (the lower the density, the bigger the pixel size.)

That means things will look bigger on the iPad mini (bigger pixels), but you'll see more things on the Android tablets (more pixels). The iPad mini also has greater height (in landscape orientation) and width (in portrait orientation), thanks to its 4:3 aspect ratio. That's great for anything that requires reading, including ebooks, web pages, and even multi-column interfaces. Here's an example of a popular website on the iPad mini (left) and the and the Nexus 7/Kindle Fire HD 7 (right), in both landscape (top) and portrait (bottom). I've highlighted the interface chrome to better differentiate active content areas.

Thanks to the greater height in landscape, you get much more visible content on the iPad mini, and much bigger content, though it's not as sharp as it is on either the Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD. Because it isn't as tall in portrait, however, the iPad mini shows slightly less content, though Android 4.1 Jelly Bean's persistent control bar at the bottom mitigates some of the aspect ratio advantage.

Here's an example of a list-view based app, in the case the native mail apps, on the iPad mini (left) and the and the Nexus 7/Kindle Fire HD 7 (right), in portrait orientation. I've highlighted the interface chrome to better differentiate active content areas.

Where the iPad mini shares exactly the same, consistent tablet interface as the iPad, with multicolumn, tablet-class apps, the Nexus 7 combines aspects of Android smartphone and tablet interfaces on an app-by-app basis. That's likely a stop-gap on Google's part, however, and we'll hopefully see more tablet-optimized interface from Google in the near future. Likewise, Apple has over 250,000 iPad-optimized apps on the App Store, all of which will run pixel-perfectly on the iPad mini. Android is still severely lacking when it comes to tablet apps. Again, that should change as Google's tablet platform matures. (The Amazon Kindle Fire isn't really a tablet, it's a media appliance, so while it's interface is good enough for that, it's not really directly comparable to either the iPad mini or Nexus 7).

However, that media content brings up another difference between the small tablets. The Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire 7 HD have an aspect ratio of 16:10, closer to the 16:9 of the iPhone 5, which offers greater width (in landscape orientation) and height (in portrait orientation). That's better for HD video and single column lists. Here's an example of a popular movie on the iPad mini (left) and the and the Nexus 7/Kindle Fire HD 7 (right), in both widescreen (top) and full screen (bottom). I've highlighted the interface chrome to better differentiate active content areas.

The iPad mini shows the wide screen version of the movie at a larger size, but downscales it from 1280 horizontal pixels to 1024 horizontal pixels (and vertically downscales from 720p to 585p). Full motion graphics, like movies and video games, however, are extremely resilient when it comes to screen density (just look at the variety of sizes 1080p television sets come in). So, it won't look terrible, but it won't look as good as the pixel-perfect Android tablets. At full screen, the iPad mini is much bigger, but also cuts off much more of the picture on both sides, an absolute deal-breaker for movie fans.

So what does all this mean? Apple is right in that you do get both bigger content on the iPad mini and more usable display area for most types of apps and media. Amazon is right in that their display is better. For most people, for most things, bigger beats better. Add to that Apple's huge advantage in both tablet software and international content, and it makes for a compelling argument that in this case, the iPad mini overcomes the relatively lower pixel density to provide a more compelling product overall.

I'm one of those people, however, for whom display density does matter greatly. I'm used to an iPhone 5 and iPad 3 (same as iPad 4) and MacBook Pro all with Retina display. Chunky pixels are like sandpaper on my pampered pupils. While the iPad mini is better than the iPad 2, it's identical to the iPhone 3GS, and going back to that is going to be tough.

Design is compromise, however. You can't have everything and you certainly can't have it all now. The iPad mini is 7.2 mm thin, thinner by half than an iPad 3 or iPad 4. If Apple had crammed a Retina display in now, not only would battery life have suffered, but it would have become much thicker and much heavier. If they'd used a 720p display like the Nexus 7 or Amazon Kindle Fire 7 HD, they would have broken compatibility with those 250,000 existing iPad apps. Likewise If they'd switched to the iPhone and iPod touch interface -- they would have made a big iPod touch instead of a small iPad. And Apple made a small (concentrated) iPad.

The iPad mini will likely go Retina with the second or third generation, and all of these concerns will disappear, like the pixels on the display. Until then, check out the example above and see if the difference in size and content area make the iPad mini a good compromise for you, at least for now.
