1st Bio Mom Visit - Adoption.com Forums

Can I ask a question before I answer yours...you say that this is an adoptive placement, but it's pretty obvious that parental rights are still in tact. Is this a foster placement that you are hoping will go to adoption or do they have TPR already scheduled. I just want to make sure you're head is in the right place. Until a judge's gavel bangs, a placement isn't guaranteed adoption. Relatives can come forward, BPs can work their plan, it's all up in the air.

Onto your questions. In my area, that would be normal. We are trained to expect a visit withing the 1st 48hrs of placement. Best practice would be withing 24hrs of placement

In my area you would not meet the bio at the 1st visit unless you were comfortable doing so. Usually it happens further in (2 weeks-ish). There are exceptions, but those are usually more experienced foster parents who aren't worried about meeting.

As for the BP knowing you're interested in adopting...I doubt it and IF you do meet, I would not bring it up. Can you imagine meeting someone for the 1st time and they tell you, BTW, I'm going to adopt your kid. It wouldn't really be the best ice breaker (IMO). IMO, the bio shouldn't know your interest in adopting until it is absolutely necessary (TPR has been filed).

Once visits get going, yes, there should be a set schedule. Remember that visits are federally required to be at a time that works for the bio parent. So they will consider the schedules in the following order:

1) visit supervisor
2) bio parent
3) foster parent

Obviously they will consider the fact that you have a job and need to work, but they are legally required to make visits happen for the BP, and it will be during business hours. Hopefully if they set visits for when you are in school they have someone who can transport (some areas do), my area does not offer any assistance with transportation. My current FS has 4 parent visits/week + PT & OT and his regular doctor visits.

Congratulations on your kiddos! Good luck with tomorrow!
